The Laws that will Grow Your Business

rules of businessDefining and declaring your Immutable Laws can make your business, and not knowing them can break your business. According to Mike Michalowicz, author of The Pumpkin Plan, “Immutable Laws (are) the unbreakable rules you follow that serve as the spine of your business.” Why are they so important, you ask? Because they will guide you to make the choices that are in line with who you are, and as a result, to grow your business in a way that is in line with your deepest held convictions.

Here are a few ways that Immutable Laws can play a crucial role in your business growth.

Determining who to do business with

A big part of the Pumpkin Plan method, and determining your Sweet Spot, is knowing who your Top Clients are and filling your business with them. When you and everyone in your business know your Company’s Immutable Laws, saying no to a client who is not ideal, and who will cause more headaches than they’re worth, becomes easy. At the same time, attracting those who are a great fit for the way you do business happens almost effortlessly.

Determining which opportunities to pursue and which to avoid

Over the years we have been presented with opportunities that looked good on paper, but bumped up against two of our most valued immutable laws:

Respectful Communication is paramount. We treat others as we would want to be treated ourselves.

Our Immutable Laws have given us the direction we needed to say no to those opportunities, and breath a sigh of relief knowing that we have the space to focus our energy on working with people and on projects who share these values instead. Many of the time-sucking problems and costly energy drains in our business can be traced back to clients who are not a fit with our Immutable Laws, and we are better off recognizing this at the outset.

Determining who to hire

The same can be said for the vendors we do business with, and the employees we hire.

Three more of our Immutable Laws are:

We do business and life with integrity and authenticity.

 We make no excuses – we take responsibility for our actions, in-actions and results.

 We honor our commitments as a way of life and business.

How many of you have ever had an employee or vendor that was full of excuses, and took no ultimate responsibility for their results? Or perhaps they behave one way when they’re being observed, and another when they’re not? This is not acceptable behavior at our organization, and we don’t do business with those who aren’t aligned with these values.

If you are wondering how you would know ahead of time if a prospective employee is aligned with your Immutable Laws, present them with a few different hypothetical scenarios, and ask them how they would handle the situation. Their answers will give you a good idea of whether they will fit in with your company culture, and ultimately contribute to the growth of your business.

Where to Start

The best way to get started on your Immutable Laws is to think about the things that are really important to you. And not just any values, but the ones that will not change throughout your life (that’s what makes them “Immutable”). Next, spend a week observing yourself. What really, really bothers you? If you have a deep emotional response to something, chances are an Immutable Law has been violated for you.

For example, I noticed that I have a very strong reaction when people back out of their commitments, or don’t take them seriously. “We honor our commitments” therefore became a way of doing business for me and my company.

Once you have your Immutable Laws in writing, share them with your employees, your vendors, your clients and your prospective clients, and watch the magic happen! You will experience a thriving company culture, your employees will know exactly how to treat your customers and what behavior you expect from them, you will attract customers who are drawn to the way your company does business and who will become loyal fans, and you will love working at the company that you created!
